Please can you help us to grow a greener tomorrow for our Happy House family?
We are starting the week on a serious note by launching an appeal to give our greenhouses a makeover.
It costs in the region of £650 to refurb each one and now ours are more than a decade old the harsh Kenya weather has taken its toll and that means that the crops we must grow to feed the children, in our children’s home and in school, are in jeopardy from both the elements and pests and productivity has declined severely.
While the vice-chair of our charity trustees, Phil Marshall, has been visiting he has seen how much our greenhouses need improvement.
He explains that we have managed to refurbish one of the six so far and are already seeing the benefits, with crops of greens planted in it flourishing.
Tevin, one of our gardening staff, explains that each greenhouse will need shade netting, a new drip irrigation system, fresh topsoil and manure and pest repellents.
Shade net is a knitted fabric with Uv-resistant additives that give it durability and longevity. The shade materials help in protecting plants from direct sunlight, winds and storms while the driplines ensure that the plants are getting the water needed.
The total cost is £3250 and we will be grateful for any donation, no matter how small.
We don’t expect to do all greenhouses straight away and will go little by little – knowing the snail will eventually win the race!
We hope that you will want to help and will make a donation – every £ or Euro will help.
Every donation, however small, will make a difference.
You can make a donation through PayPal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/ChildrenofWatamu but please mark your payment “Greenhouses” so that we can be sure that is just where the money will go.
Good food grows healthy bodies and minds and in Kenya, where food security is always an issue , we need to grow our own in the best way that we can.
With thanks to each and every one of you from our Happy House family.
If you would like to make a donation another way or require any further information please email our voluntary UK coordinator, Elizabeth Gomm, elizabethgomm@childrenofwatamu.org
