Sue Hayward, our beloved founder, and her husband Dave, lovingly known as Mama and Papa, created a place filled with care and opportunity for every child. Though Sue has died, her love and vision guide everything we do.
Sue entrusted the Happy House to a dedicated and skills management and admin team who work to grow and care for the Happy House. Our administrator, Rose works to ensure everything continues to grow and improve and works to ensure the very best for all our family members. The school secretary, Velma leads with care and expertise ensuring the school runs smooth with the principal.
Our UK-registered charity, Children of Watamu, supports and grows the Happy House Project. Trustees manage and oversee the charity’s work. David Hayward chairs the trust, with Philip Marshall as Vice Chair.
Elizabeth Gomm, known as Auntie Libby, volunteers as our UK coordinator. She works tirelessly to support and promote Happy House, ensuring Sue’s vision thrives.
In Kenya, our house aunties provide a loving and nurturing home for the children. They take care of daily needs, from meals to creating a safe and supportive environment.
Our social worker, Auntie Elina, ensures the welfare of the children. She works closely with Malindi’s children’s office, handles birth certificate issues, and tackles other welfare challenges.
Our outdoor team cultivates fresh food, tends the gardens, and keeps the property in excellent condition. Skilled carpenters in our joinery workshop repair furniture and maintain the home.
Everything we do stems from love – for the children and the family who supports them.
