Sponsors make memories for our children

Our children at the Happy House really love the friends from around the world who are their sponsors.

The emails, photographs, birthday cards etc they have sent are their personal treasures, kept safely in their memory boxes.

They may never have met their sponsors but they feel as if they are family.

Each child has their own memory box, a simple box file, and all are stored safely in the office.

Any child can leaf through their cherished memorries whenever they wish, but nobody else can without their permission.

Mama Sue was adamant that each child should have this little bit of personal space because they were growing up in a community of kids . While they have their own lockers for clohes and personal items, they’re not locked and kids will be kids! Mama would recall the early days of her marriage to Papa Dave when she explained why she thought memory boxes important: Dave was one of 10 children, 11 when a neighbour died and his mum adopted her child.

“His family had very little and everything was shared – even beds. “When we married all Dave wanted was a drawer of his own. It didn’t matter if it had nothing in but a comb and a peice of string, nobody but nobody but him could look inside. It was his and his alone.” Here Abdul, Ludwin, James and David are looking through their boxes.
